Case Study:

Let's review two real-life examples of results obtained by using the ZipMail /DB bitmap optimization features.

John has found new offices for the headquarters of one of his customers.
He wants to send them a picture of the building (1,600 x 1,200 Pixels JPG taken with his digital camera).

TEST 1 - 81% savings - 1.45 MB transformed to 278 KB

John opens this picture in his imaging software and does a quick copy/paste of the picture from his imaging software to a Notes message:

Internally, (You cannot see this because Notes renders the image in the document's body), this picture is stored as a BMP file inside the Notes document.
This because it has been copy/pasted from a windows application (and this, even if the original file displayed in the imaging software was a JPG file, like in our example).

The volume of this Notes document is, after saving it in the draft folder of Notes, and as reported by Notes is 1,493,496 bytes:


Let's run ZipMail /DB on this document with the following options:

The volume of the Notes document, once processed by ZipMail /DB is now, as reported by Notes, 284,685 bytes:

And the rendering of the picture displayed in Notes is exactly the same!

ZipMail /DB saved 1,208,811 bytes on 1,493,496.
The resulting Notes document is 5.25 times smaller than the original one. (81% storage savings).

TEST 2 - 98.5 % savings - 1.45 MB transformed to 22 KB!

As you can see, the size of picture copy/pasted by John is to big to fit well in the body of his message.
That's the reason why, in this second test, John decides to resize his picture.
To do this, he uses the handle displayed at the bottom right corner of the copied and pasted picture in his Notes message.
After the picture has been scaled down, the John's message looks better:

Internally, as in our previous test, (You cannot see this Because Notes renders the image in the document's body), this picture is stored as a BMP file inside the Notes document.
This because it has been copy/pasted from a windows application (and this even if the original file displayed in the imaging software was a JPG file, like in our example).

The size of this Notes document is, after saving it in the draft folder, and, as reported by Notes, 1,493,527 bytes.

The same size as before!

The reason is that here, Notes does a logical resizing of the picture for the rendering purpose. Internally, the picture is not physically resized by Notes!

Let's use ZipMail /DB with the following settings:

As you noticed, this time, we checked the "Logical -> Physical resize" option.
ZipMail will so resize physically the logically-resized pictures contained in the Notes documents it processes (only if they are resized smaller than the original ones).

The size of the Notes document is now, as reported by Notes is only 22,048 bytes.

No, you are not dreaming!

ZipMail /DB has just reduced this 1.45 MB Notes document to only 22 KB.

With this document, ZipMail /DB saved 1,471,448 bytes on 1,493,496, a huge 98.5% savings!!! The resulting document is 66 times smaller than the original.
